The Simple Past Tense

Main Rules

The simple past expresses actions that were completed in the past.

He walked to the store yesterday. She reviewed her notes last week.

Most past tense verbs are created with the -ed ending.

changed
study
studied
stop

Spelling Rules

If a word ends in E, just add D.
Y changes to I when adding -ed.
If a word ends in a vowel + 1 consonant, double the consonant and add -ed.
A few, rare words end in O. Then add -ed.
