Pronunciation Tips

If you are very interested in pronunciation, you should check out the 500 Common Words section on this site (for beginners) or the 750 Business Words class (for intermediate to advanced speakers). This is only a quick guide to help you pronounce the idioms in this class in a natural-sounding way.

1. When you listen to the videos, try to hear the stressed word in each phrase. Mimic that stressed word and let the other words flow together. Idioms are understood expressions. You want to speak them and assume people will understand you. When people are listening, they often understand an entire phrase from one key word.

2. Notice the reduced words like to, and, or, for and others. When you hear reduced sounds in the videos, mimic them. Remember that reduced words are part of the cultural word stress (intonation), and they actually help other people to hear the stressed word and so understand the phrase.

3. If you have not studied American English at all, learn about American T sounds and R sounds. We reduce many T's and pronounce all R's. It's a good idea to study these two letters to get the American accent a little bit. You can follow the links above to the pronunciation classes.
