Contractions with NOT in the Present and Future Tenses: Isn't, Aren't, Can't, Don't, Doesn't, Won't

Pronunciation tips
Americans tend to speak with a stopped T sound in these words. The sound is stopped, and the T is not articulated. You might also think of this as a half T sound. In all of these words, the N sound is enough to differentiate the positive from the negative, with the exception of can and can't. The difference between these words is often a prolonged A sound in the negative can't.
Aren't can be pronounced two ways: arent  or arnt 

Answer the questions.

1. How's the weather now?

--Answer with a negative, then a positive statement. For example: It isn't raining anymore. It's sunny.
2. Tell me about the city or town where you live. Using isn't, describe some negative points.

3. Tell me some things that people in your family aren't good at doing. For example: We aren't good at singing ... or ... Most of us aren't good at singing, but my daughter can sing well.

4. What are some things that aren't in your kitchen cupboard or refrigerator? Use there isn't and there aren't.

5. Describe a few things you can't do well, e.g. things you can't cook, home repairs you can't do or aspects of business you can't do, perhaps because you lack certification or experience.

6. Think of someone you know, a relative or friend. What are some things this person can't do very well?

7. What are some household chores that you usually don't want to do?

8. What are some work tasks that you usually don't want to do? Why? Do you do these things anyway?

9. What are some household chores that your spouse/child usually doesn't want to do? Or doesn't do at all?

10. What kind of weather is unusual in your area? Use doesn't get. For example: In Seattle, it doesn't get too hot in the summer.

11. When people ask you to contribute to a social occasion, what is something you usually won't do? For example: I won't bring home-made dessert because I'm not good at baking.

12. Think about people in your family. What are some things they probably won't do this year, perhaps because of lack of time or disinterest?

13. Predict the weather tomorrow using a negative statement and a positive one. Example: I think it won't be sunny. It'll rain.

14. Complain about a current problem or frustration. Use as many negative contractions as you can.
