Until the mid 1800's, most dogs lived off of table scraps from their
owners. An American, named James Spratt, gained the idea of creating a
dog treat while watching dogs nibble on old biscuits in a shipyard. His
dog treat went into production and eventually his company joined
General Mills. Canned horse meat was sold by the Ken-L-Ration brand
after WWI as a way of utilizing deceased horses. By the end of WWII,
pet food sales had grown to $200 million. Companies realized the
possibility of making a profit from by-products.Today, most people feed their dogs with dog food. Some professional breeders and
canine lovers dislike dog food because they believe it has additives
which could be unhealthy. |

There is also an entirely new form of "dog food." In the software world, untested software which is used by company employees has been called "dog food." This idea of "eating our own dog food" originated at Microsoft and means that employees have to use untested software in order to perfect it before it is released. |
