How To Pronunciation: Letters with L, R and more Consonant Combinations

The consonants are all the letters that are not vowels: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z.

These combinations do not include the letters with H (sh, ch, th, ...) . Go to Letters with H practice.

American English has quite a few consonant combinations. You need to know these in order to have strong listening and spelling skills. Notice that most combinations have L or R. L and R are half-vowels phonetically. This means that when L or R is not the first letter, we hear a slight vowel sound, as in "ul" or "ur." When you say "blue," it sounds like "bulue." The word "grow" sounds like "gurow." It takes a little time to get from a consonant to an L or R sound. Here are the major consonant combinations:

Practice pronouncing consonant combinations by comparing words. The first word has a consonant combination. The second includes a vowel in between consonants. If there is a vowel between consonants in the spelling, give the vowel more time.

Practice Tip: You can also use this list repeatedly with an instructor. Your instructor writes down a list of answers, then speaks the words to you. You write your answers and see if they match. You can also reverse this to check your pronunciation: you write down a set of answers, then speak, and see if your instructor was able to hear you correctly.
