Bhutan has been one of the world's most reclusive kingdoms. It lies between China and India and was governed by an absolute monarch until 2008. In that year, the monarch relinquished power, and the kingdom became a consistutional monarchy with a democratic government. Since then, the younger generation have begun to question some of the country's old laws. For instance, they ban tobacco, and police have the right to use sniffing dogs to find offenders of this law and jail them. In a small country such as this, before the use of social media, people spoke among themselves if there was any dissent. Now, there is a popular Facebook page which renounces the law against tobacco. It is an early sign of change within Bhutan. |
