In New Dehli, a protest leader named Anna Hazare was
arrested Tuesday en route to a city park where thousands of supporters would have joined him in an anti-corruption hunger
strike. The police issued a release for Hazare on Wednesday, but Hazare
refused to leave jail until he was allowed to do so unconditionally. At last, Hazare accepted a police offer to limit
his hunger strike and mass demonstration
to 15 days. Mr. Hazare is pushing for the creation of an independent
anti-corruption agency. A bill is already pending in parliament, but
Hazare believes this bill is too weak because it exempts the prime
minister and the judiciary from scrutiny. India's news stations have
provided round-the-clock coverage which has heightened public attention. |
