How to Speak Casual English: AY, UY, EY, OW and a Vowel

When we have an ending with Y, we often use the Y sound to let words flow together. This happens naturally when a word ends in Y and the next word begins with a vowel. The Y is not a large sound--it simply connects words. If a word ends in OW and the next word starts with a vowel, the W sound can be used.

In the phrases below, you can also reduce other small words and speak smoothly. Review how to use casual speech.

The long I sound is shown with ī. The long A sound is shown with ā. The long O sound is ō. The double vowel sound, as in the word "how" is shown with ăō.
