Contractions

Contractions are frequently used in American English. If you would like to sound more casual or fluent, try to use them often. In this section, you will find questions designed to show you popular usage. Speak the answers aloud, and remember to pronounce the contractions without the apostrophe.

Example: I'm -- sounds like IM, not I am, the A in AM has been removed. The I and M sounds are connected without any break or pause.
Example 2: you're and your are homophones. They sound exactly the same.
Example 3: they're, their, and there are homophones too. All three words sound the same.
